Local Spotlight: Jackson, Wyoming

The town of Jackson, Wyoming is located in Teton County, in the Northwestern part of the state. Jackson is located within Jackson Hole (which is actually the entire 60-mile long valley). The elevation of the town is 6,234 feet. There are two ski resorts in Jackson (and one other in Teton County): Snow King Resort, located directly in the center of town; and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which is located about 12 miles northwest of town. Teton County is 97% public land.

Snow King Resort is a small but challenging mountain with one of the steepest vertical drops in the country. It’s also one of few night-lit resorts in the U.S. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, by contrast, is one of the largest resorts in the country, with 116 named trails on 2500 in-bounds acres with over 4,000 feet of vertical, and an additional 3000+ acres of gated backcountry terrain. The area gets an average of 439” of annual snowfall.

Besides downhill skiing and snowboarding, Jackson provides a number of winter recreational activities. There are dog sled tours and races, ice skating, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. In summer there’s the alpine slide, biking, hiking, boating, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, fishing, golf, hunting, horseback riding, hot air ballooning, hang gliding, mountaineering, stagecoach and wagon rides and a rodeo.

Jackson also boasts a number of art galleries and centers (including a $30 million arts center in town), fine dining, shopping and other cultural activities. Events include ElkFest, Old West Days, the Fall Arts Festival, Jackson Hole Scottish Festival, New Year’s Eve Celebration, and the Town Square Lighting. The Jackson area is also a gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge.

Second home owners in Jackson include Vice President Dick Cheney, Harrison Ford, Tiger Woods, and Sandra Bullock. Single family homes start at over $600,000 and top out at over $30 million. Condos can be found for under $150,000 and top out at over $2 million.
